The Municipality of Groningen organizes information meetings on the vision of city logistics 2025

A safe, clean and attractive city center with enough space for everyone. That is what the municipality of Groningen wants to achieve. But it is getting busier, fuller and there is more and more traffic. This means that the municipality must handle the available space in a smart way. That is why the municipality is taking measures to organize city logistics more efficiently and with less inconvenience. Would you like to know more about this? You can register yourself for one of the information meetings that the municipality is organizing on this topic.

Zero emission

A clean city center requires clean freight and delivery traffic, without harmful emissions. That is why the municipality will set a “zero emission zone” (ZE zone) in 2025. This means: no more trucks or delivery vans running on petrol or diesel, but propulsion by, for example, electricity, hydrogen or muscle power. This applies, among other things, to the stocking of shops and catering, waste collection and to construction and event traffic.

Delivery time windows

Another measure focuses on the delivery time windows, which currently appply to parts of the city center. Freight and delivery traffic is only allowed to drive here in the morning. An exemption is required outside these times. This restriction does not apply in other streets in the city center. That will change in 2022. From then on, the same rules for loading and unloading will apply to all businesses in the city center.

The delivery time window will apply to all streets within the Diepenring and at the Westerhaven shopping area (marked in pink on the image)

Pilots & hubs

In addition to these measures, the municipality has developed a number of experiments with entrepreneurs. For example, trials are underway with “hubs”, where different carriers deliver their orders. They are bundled there and brought to retailers and residents on electric cargo bicycles.
