A new trial with an automatically controlled train will start next summer. The NS, Arriva and ProRail will jointly carry out tests between Groningen Main Station and De Vork depot near Haren. The tests consist of remote control of a train from a so-called ‘Remote Operations Center’ via a 5G connection.
From a distance
In several steps, tests will show whether it is possible to safely control a train from a distance. This summer’s test is a follow-up to earlier tests with Automatically Controlled Trains (ATO) two years ago. In this previous test a self-driving train with passengers drove between Groningen and Buitenpost. A train driver was present in the train to switch on the self-driving system. In the new test, the driver operates the train remotely. The tests will take place at night this summer.
