5G Student Battle

Arriva buses and trains drive in many places and connect the city and the surrounding area. Public transport plays an important social role in transporting passengers. With the rise of 5G, public transport could possibly mean even more to travellers and residents, for example in safety, quality of life, environment and sustainability.

In the weekend of 14 and 15 November 2020, students from MBO, HBO and WO worked on solutions for the future, using 5G. Arriva brought up an issue on the theme of 5G and mobility: how can Arriva, “since we’re here anyway”, make an extra social contribution to liveability and safety in its region with its vehicles (trains, buses and water buses), using 5G?

The 5G and Mobility team won the prize for the best IoT solution. This team devised a way to map the quality of the road and the conditions of the surrounding area with the help of sensors on Arriva buses and the 5G network. The team received six NB-IoT starter kits (made available by Vodafone) from the jury.
