How ‘smart’ is the maritime sector in 2030?
In the Netherlands, a large number of organisations and companies are working on smart shipping and developments in the field of autonomous shipping. But, what will smart shipping look like in 2030? And, why is it important? The Netherlands Forum for Smart Shipping (SMASH!) has elaborated this in the digital Roadmap Smart Shipping, which was launched during the Europort trade fair in Rotterdam on the 3th of November. The roadmap is available digitally via the website www.smashroadmap.com.
A Roadmap Smart Shipping, why?
If the Netherlands wants to continue to play a role on the international maritime stage, it must focus on pioneering technologies such as smart shipping. In addition, highly automated sailing is an answer to problems such as the growing shortage of personnel, access to hard-to-reach areas and safety. Smart shipping offers the maritime sector the solution. However, this development is incredibly complex at the same time. Not only in the technical aspect, but also with regard to regulations.
In the Netherlands, a large number of organisations and companies are already working on smart shipping and developments in the field of autonomous shipping. To further realise smart shipping, overview, strategy and collaboration are needed. With the digital Smart Shipping Roadmap, the Netherlands Forum for Smart Shipping (SMASH!) offers insight into the opportunities and challenges that the maritime sector will encounter in the field of smart shipping until 2030.
What is smart shipping?
Smart shipping is highly automated sailing at sea and on inland waterways. For example, ships are increasingly being fitted with systems that support the captain. However, smart shipping goes further than just the smart ship: adjustments are also needed to the sailing environment in order for the smart ship to do its job. Smart shipping is a development that improves the international competitive position of the maritime sector in the Netherlands. It contributes to more sustainable shipping and also makes shipping safer through digital systems that support human actions.
What does the Netherlands Forum for Smart Shipping do?
The Netherlands Forum for Smart Shipping (in short: SMASH!) is a public-private partnership in which business, knowledge institutions and governments work together on smart shipping. Together they aim to realise the implementation of highly automated sailing in the Netherlands. Thanks to the insight that the Roadmap Smart Shipping offers, SMASH! bring the right parties together to take away the obstacles as described in the Roadmap, inform parties and initiate projects to promote smart shipping.
SMASH! is an initiative of Nederland Maritiem Land, TKI Maritiem, TKI Dinalog, Ministerie van IenW, Netherlands Maritime Technology, KVNR, EICB, Gemeente Rotterdam, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam, Havenbedrijf Amsterdam, Groningen SeaPorts, Maritime Delta, InnovationQuarter, TU Delft,MARIN, Provincie Zuid-Holland and Hive.Mobility.
